The family of a man who died in a 2000 collision on U.S. 17 has received a $1 million award through arbitration, according to a release by Beaufort attorneys Jared Newman and Olin McDougall II who represented the family.'
The 22-mile stretch of U.S. 17 from Gardens Corner to Jacksonboro in Colleton County has been the site of 34 deaths since 1997. Federal, state and local officials continue to campaign for the widening of the highway, expected to begin in March and cost about $150 million.'
Ronald Crockford of Hazelton, Pa., died March 15, 2000, when the tractor-trailer he was driving was hit by another truck traveling on the wrong side of the road, S.C. Highway Patrol officials said at the time. '
The other driver, Donnacan McLean of Pompano Beach, Fla., was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the charges were not pursued, according to McDougal's staff.'
McLean and his company, Massive Trucking of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., were the other parties involved in the arbitration, according to McDougal's staff.'
In the accident, about 3 miles north of Gardens Corner, the cab of Crockford's truck was ripped off and thrown into a pond more than 20 feet away, according to authorities.'
The case was settled through arbitration in Pennsylvania because that is where Crockford lived.
